dos& don’ts: Touring basics
This edition’s tips come from Initiative Pop Educator Philo Oppenhäuser – founder of the Hamburg-based PR agency ANGER MANAGEMENT and a long-time expert in the European music business. Philo has worked closely with emerging and established artists across genres, knows the realities of touring life inside out, and has seen what really makes a tour work (and what quietly breaks it).
These tips are for you – especially if you’re currently planning a tour, thinking about hitting the road for the first time, or wondering how to make touring more sustainable in the long run. Practical, honest, and straight from real-life experience. 🤝

Philo’s Don’ts for being on tour
❌ Don’t overplay or show off — serve the songs.
❌ Don’t argue on stage — keep drama backstage.
❌ Don’t be late for load-in, soundcheck, or departure.
❌ Don’t overpack — you're not moving in, you're touring.
❌ Don’t ignore mental health — burnout is real. Talk, journal, check in.
❌ Don’t expect luxury — be ready for weird couches and gas station meals.
❌ Don’t skip promoting your own shows — socials and outreach help turnout.
❌ Don’t forget why you're doing it — it’s about the music, the people, and the ride.
Philo’s Dos for being on tour

✅ Do stick to the setlist unless changes are planned ahead.
✅ Do bring backups (strings, cables, batteries, sticks, etc.).
✅ Do be punctual — loading in late affects everyone.
✅ Do pack smart — bring essentials but keep it compact.
✅ Do respect the venue staff — bartenders, sound engineers, promoters.
✅ Do be kind to your tour mates — personal space is gold.
✅ Do support other bands — watch their sets when you can.
